On Thursday, May 10th, a free conference will be held at the New Jersey Law Center. The Conference, titled Strategies for Seniors, will cover a variety of issues that seniors should be aware of.
In every stage of an individual?s life, there are legal issues to be particularly aware of. When you are young, those issues may involve drug and alcohol use, drunk driving, and other lifestyle related issues. But those of us who are retired, and are perhaps thinking about estate planning and trying to make decisions for the future, there are unique concerns.
One speaker at the conference, Lawrence Friedman, will discuss several estate planning techniques, from a Power of Attorney, to wills and trusts, to healthcare directives and tax planning. The conference will cover the benefits of creating different end-of-life planning documents and devices, and what kinds of estates and circumstances could benefit from them.
Another speaker, Cathyanne Pisciotta, will cover issues relating to guardianship, the process by which family members take over decision-making for an elderly relative. She will discuss how to obtain a guardianship, as well as when the right time might be to do so.
A third presenter, Peggy Sheanan Knee, will discuss planning for old age, and how best to prepare your estate so that your wishes are met.
Most Americans never obtain a will, much less any of the various legal estate planning devices which exist solely to make things better and plan for the wishes of the individual. This conference is a good, free place to get an idea of the kinds of tools available, and to develop a game plan for your own life.
The conference will be held between 10 am and 12:30 pm on May 10th, at the New Jersey Law Center. Call the New Jersey State Bar Foundation for more information.
