The Gamesville Blog: Best Pets: Ta2oodlady's Tiny Terror

Written by felixturtle / February 28, 2012 8:26 am / 4 Comments

BestPets_TinyTerrorThis week?s Best Pets comes to us from Gamesviller ta2oodlady of New Castle, Pennsylvania!

Distinguishing Personality Traits

Ta2oodlady shared with us why Maggie is so special to her. ?This is TT, (Tiny Terror). He is what is fondly called a Chiweenie. He?s a cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund.

I have had him for 2 years now and he?d defend me with his life. ?Not long after I got him, I was hospitalized. After I was released and came home, he became devoted to me. ?I can?t move anywhere in my apartment without him close by.

If I go anywhere where he?s not allowed, he sits at the front door and whines until I come home. When I get in I have to sit down and let him crawl all over me so he can see that I?m alright. ?He has a laundry basket full of toys and his favorite pastime is to bring his toys to me one at a time and make me play with him. ?If I ignore him he just keeps pressing the toy into me until I finally play with him.

He is all of 3 1/2 lbs and bullies my 15 pound Siamese cat. ?One time he?s growling at him and the next moment he?s licking the cat and cleaning his ears or using the cat as a pillow. ?He?s loved by anyone who lives in my apartment building and is spoiled by all.?

Event at Arizona Biltmore supports pancreatic cancer research at TGen

PHOENIX, Ariz. Feb. 27, 2012 The 9th annual Seena Magowitz Celebrity Golf Classic raised $553,443 for pancreatic cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) through the Seena Magowitz Foundation.

These funds will go toward new international clinical trials run by TGen's Pancreatic Cancer Research Team.

This was the first time that major retailers, producers and suppliers in the mattress industry longtime supporters of pancreatic cancer research came together at the landmark Arizona Biltmore for the annual Seena Magowitz tournament.

More than 200 golfers took to the links Dec. 3, 2011, followed by an award luncheon, at which Roger E. Magowitz, President and co-founder of the Seena Magowitz Foundation, challenged everyone, the way he challenges himself.

"If not me, then who?" said Magowitz, a Scottsdale resident who for nearly a decade has championed research into finding a cure for pancreatic cancer, a disease that took the life of his mother, Seena, in 2001. "The 'who' is each one of you in this room," he said. "The 'who' is your business and your friends. The 'who' is an entire mattress industry united to fighting pancreatic cancer. I've never heard of any entire industry fighting a disease. We can beat this disease."

Magowitz, a long-time industry retailer, now is charitable advisor for Houston-based Mattress Firm, who has become a major sponsor.

Steve Stagner, President and CEO of Mattress Firm, a leading national bedding specialty retailer, served as Honorary Tournament Chairman: "This year's Seena Magowitz Classic provided us with a great opportunity to rededicate our commitment to putting an end to pancreatic cancer."

Michael Bassoff, President of the non-profit TGen Foundation, expressed his deep gratitude for the significant contributions made this past year by Roger Magowitz and Steve Stagner.

"In our fight against pancreatic cancer, there is no more powerful ally than Roger Magowitz, whose own commitment has initiated many incredible partnerships within the home furnishings industry," Bassoff said. "We also are extremely grateful to have merited the support of Steve Stagner and the Mattress Firm."

In March 2011, Mattress Firm announced that it named TGen its "charitable partner of choice," specifically funding TGen's pancreatic cancer research.

In May 2011, Mattress Firm kicked off their fundraising efforts for TGen's pancreatic cancer clinical trials.

In December 2011, pancreatic clinical trials began through TGen and other sites that are named for Seena Magowitz.

Community Languages Australia Council votes to reignite National Languages Policy discussions

?Community Languages Australia (CLA) will commence discussions with key stakeholders to reignite the debate for the introduction of a National Languages Policy. Australia last had a National Languages Policy endorsed by the Commonwealth Government in 1987.

The National Languages Policy at the time served the nation well from the perspective of politics, social cohesion, social psychology and sociolinguistics.

Community Languages Australia / AFESA Council held its quarterly meeting Melbourne on Saturday February 25, 2012 and discussed ways of moving the agenda forward.

CLA Executive Director Stefan Romaniw presented an action paper outlining the benefits a National Languages Policy in the past and the need for such a policy at this time.

Whilst work being undertaken with the introduction of a National Curriculum, a solid foundation and national coordinated policy support for languages education and multicultural education would entrench these important areas in the education menu in Australia. It would provide national consistency in policy terms.

CLA acknowledges that on jurisdictional levels there are statements and policies outlining vision, direction and commitment. Nationally over the past years there has been a National Statement on Languages Education.

The ?void? in terms of a National Policy tends to work in favour of those who want to divide different language interests, whereas a national and coordinated approach would be comprehensive and supportive, of all language communities.

The void in policy has represented a problem for the Australian curriculum There is a need for guiding principles and policy, that would encapsulate on a national level the efforts of the Commonwealth, jurisdictions, communities and NGO?s working in the languages education and multicultural education areas.

?An initial discussion about the overall benefits of a National Languages Policy needs to be reignited,? CLA Executive Director Stefan Romaniw said after meeting.

?The NLP of 1987 could serve a sound starting point on which we could build and reshape accordingly to meet the needs and challenges of 2012 and beyond.? Mr Romaniw said.

Community Languages Australia resolved to compile a list of key stakeholders and work towards facilitating a meeting to develop a strategy for moving the issue forward and will call on key stakeholders for support on this issue.

The Council meeting also accepted reports from State and Territory Associations and also endorsed Reports presented recently to Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) .

The reports provided a comprehensive overview of the great amount of activity in the community languages school sector nationally with each State and Territory. Association providing evidence of work in the teaching and learning of languages, teacher training, professional development and social cohesion and cooperation with jurisdictions.

?AFESA Chair Tassos Douvartzides commended AFESA members for their commitment and ongoing service in providing programs for the maintenance of languages and culture in Australia.

?? Community languages schools provide a great service and they are very much part of each government?s plan for delivering languages education in Australia?? Mr Douvartzides said

?The meeting also discussed ;

  • the importance of working with mainstream and ethnic media in promoting the sector,
  • forming strong relationships and partnerships with host mainstream schools,
  • the introduction of the Certificate IV Training Course funded by the Victorian DECCD
  • the development of a Rental Agreement Framework.

?The 10th National Community Languages Conference will be held in Adelaide on Saturday July 14, 2012.

Cirque's proximity and grip sensor knows your left from your right, won't let you turn up your car stereo

Today's driving laws are awash with restrictions designed to help cut down on distracted driving -- no texting, no TV, no phone calls and no fun. The good 'ol car stereo has managed to stay off the ban list, but rest easy, cautious driver, if it were to be outlawed, the folks at Cirque could build one that wouldn't respond to the driver's commands. The outfit's latest sensor tech can distinguish the user's right hand from their left, making it possible for future vehicle controls to ignore input from the driver. Cirque says the "proximity sensing with grip detection" technology will allow devices to react contextually to how they are used, creating more customized interactions for future automobiles, medical terminals and other consoles. Fine by us, as long as they don't ban our beats. Peep the video up top for a quick demo, or read on for the outfit's official press release.

97% The Artist

In an age where Hollywood is heading in the direction of big, bloated 3D blockbusters, The Artist reflects on where we were almost a century ago. What was film like back then? In a very unique stylistic choice, French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius decides to give the audience the silent film treatment. And yet, this style is very much a way of identifying with the main protagonist, George Valentin.Valentin is the most popular actor of his time. He is a proud man - too proud - but his films make money and audiences love him. That is, until the day that the studios decide to introduce sound into the process. As Valentin is told in a board meeting, audiences loved his face, but they won't love his voice. His days are over - out with the old, in with the new. As his life begins to crumble, a young actress named Peppy Miller replaces Valentin as the most in demand. Interesting enough, Peppy developed a friendship with George prior to his firing. The Artist is a pleasant film, a reflection on a time when sound - something we all take for granted now in watching movies - was completely controversial, threatening to destroy the lives of many established actors and changing the face of Hollywood forever. Today, the evolution of 3D has reached the same level of controversy, and once again seems to be changing the way we will continue to watch movies. In times like these, it's important to reflect on the past.I admire Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, who play George and Peppy respectively. They embrace the camera with the same kind of screen presence as Charlie Chapman or Lillian Gish. The soundtrack is equally exquisite, and is a key attribute to invoking the emotional arcs that this story travels through. Yet as much as I enjoyed The Artist, I am weary of the accolades this film is receiving. I don't think it's anywhere near the same league as Singin' In The Rain, still in my opinion the best film ever made about the transition towards "talkies". I find The Artist's story a bit predictable and rather shallow. What saves it for me is the style. In an age where every studio film has sucked the life out of the magic of visual effects, The Artist is wonderfully refreshing, breathing new life and new perspective into a previously thought dead art form.

Supreme Court hears arguments on real estate fees ... - Jurist

Supreme Court hears arguments on real estate fees, interpreters
Jaclyn Belczyk at 3:58 PM ET

[JURIST] The US Supreme Court [official website] heard oral arguments [day call, PDF] in two cases Tuesday. In Freeman v. Quicken Loans, Inc. [transcript, PDF; JURIST report] the court heard arguments on whether Section 8(b) of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) [text] prohibits a real estate settlement services provider from only charging an unearned fee when the fee is divided between two or more parties. The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit held [opinion, PDF] that the RESPA prohibits only kickbacks and referral fees, not unearned fees by a sole provider of settlement services. Therefore, charges that Quicken imposed on the appellants for loan discount fees and a loan processing fee are not prohibited by Section 8(b) of the RESPA. Counsel for the petitioners argued:
For decades, the agency Congress charged with administering the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act has construed that statute as prohibiting a lender from accepting a charge for a real estate settlement service it didn't provide, whether it accepts that charge directly from a consumer or indirectly through another service provider, and whether it shares that fee with another provider or keeps it all for itself. That interpretation is eminently reasonable and is entitled to deference.
Counsel for the US government argued as amicus curiae on behalf of petitioners.

In Taniguchi v. Kan Pacific Saipan, Ltd. [transcript, PDF; JURIST report], the court heard arguments on whether translating written documents is enough to be considered an "interpreter" under 28 USC ? 1920 [text] for matters of compensation. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit determined [opinion, PDF] that translating documents is acting as an interpreter under the law. Counsel for the petitioner presented "six categories of authority demonstrating that the work of an interpreter under 28 USC ? 1920(6) is limited to spoken communication. Counsel for respondent argued for a broad definition of the word "interpreter."
