Afuah approaches business models from corporate strategy, functional, operational and financial perspectives, but does not spend much time on marketing and sales. Unlike Osterwalder?s Business Model Generation,?Business Models won?t walk you through creating and testing a business model?it?s more like an owner?s manual than a cook book.

Positioning

For Afuah, ?a business model is a framework for making a profit? and each element of the business model is evaluated in terms of its ability to contribute to that goal. To make a profit, a firm must either offer its products at a lower cost than its competitors or occupy a premium position in the market through differentiation so Afuah begins by examining positioning.

A firm can position itself as either a low-cost provider or as a differentiated by features, reputation, physical location, timing, and other factors. Pricing and Revenue Models

Pricing is an important consideration because positioning alone does not provide the means necessary for a profitable business model. Afuah covers common pricing strategies such as skimming and penetration along with rationale for price cuts and increases. Although value pricing pricing at the customer?s reservation price is ideal, its usually possible, so many companies default to cost-plus pricing.

Once a pricing strategy has been established, sources of revenue can be identified:

• direct product or service sales (product sales, subscriptions, fee-for-service, markup, commission)
• post-sale services
• indirect content sales (e.g., advertising is sold to create media like TV, radio, and magazines)
• product financing (e.g., automobile financing, GE Capital)
• collect-early, pay-later financing (e.g., Dell Direct where the customer pays first and then the PC is manufactured)
• intellectual property royalties (e.g., licenses)

Afuah uses the familiar Growth-Share Matrix and the GE/McKinsey matrix as tools to evaluate revenue models. These are essentially portfolio management tools which can help with investment decisions.

Segmentation

Afuah covers customer segmentation to ensure a match between revenue model and market. Consumers can be segmented by demographics, psychographics, behavior, geography or a combination of factors. Selecting the right target involves asking questions about market size, affordability, competition (Five Forces), and internal readiness.

Internal and External Factors

From an operational perspective, examining the value chain within which a company exists is important. The concept of a value chain spans the Partners and Activities boxes on the Business Model Canvas. Reviewing the value chain can give insight into cost reduction opportunities as well as new value creation possibilities.

When discussing resources and capabilities, which are equivalent to the Key Resources box on the Business Model Canvas, Afuah uses the VRISA (value, rareness, imitability, substitutability, and appropriability) framework as an evaluation tool. A higher rating on these attributes increases the chances of a profitable business model.

To successfully execute on a business model, organizational structure, systems, processes, and people need to be aligned. Changing a business model means changing your operating model.

Business Model Evolution

Afuah presents an interesting framework for business model evolution: block, run, and team-up. Blocking consists of defending a firm?s business model from competitors; running requires continually innovating a business model to stay ahead of the pack; teaming-up involves finding complementary partners to strengthen a business model. In all cases, companies must innovate. Innovation and change can be incremental, radical, disruptive, systemic, or dynamic. Disruptive innovation is best described in Clayton Christensen?s The Innovator?s Dilemma. Systemic change is a value chain perspective that seeks to take into account all consequences and impacted elements of innovation. Dynamic change describes the idealized scenario of ?curve-jumping? where, once a technology or product matures, a new one is waiting to take its place.

Costs

Like the Business Model Canvas, Afuah calls out costs as a separate category to evaluate. He advises using a value chain, value network, or value shop approach to assess cost structure. A value chain portrays the flow of resources that the firm participates in and allows the firm to understand its role in the final customer deliverable. A value network depicts the broader ecosystem of players involved in the industry. A value shop can help identify the range of services and value that an organization provides.

Afuah identifies a set of five cost drivers ordered by stage of the business system: research & development, product design, manufacturing and operations, marketing and sales, and distribution. Each cost driver is affected by the industry the company is in along with internal considerations.

The Seven C?s

Because ?too often, firms spend time performing strategic planning without really understanding the reasons behind success or failure?, Afuah includes a ?Seven C?s? framework. These seven components form the backbone of the book and are elaborated in each chapter.

• Competitive Position ? is the firm lowest cost or differentiated?; what market segments are served?; what are sources of revenues?; what is the pricing model?
• Connected Activities ? what is the value chain?; how does it contribute to profitability?
• Competitive Forces ? how do Porter?s Five Forces play into profitability?; what other macro environmental factors are relevant?
• Critical Industry Value Drivers ? what drives cost?; what influences differentiation?
• Capabilities ? VRISA analysis
• Change and Sustainability ? how does the firm innovate its offerings and business model?
• Cost of Activities ? what are primary costs and how can they be reduced?

The book also covers various financing and valuation models for determining the funding required for operating a business. To finance a business, a business must choose the right type of investor and present a convincing case for funding. Afuah includes some considerations for selecting the timing and type of investment to seek.

In terms of planning, Afuah advises using a standard strategic planning process and using the Seven C?s model as the basis of the business plan.

The book concludes with a set of ten in-depth case studies which dissect the business model challenges of companies including Borders, eBay, and LEGO. Although not targeted at startups or business model reinvention specifically, the book uses many familiar management theories as building blocks of a comprehensive business model. As an academic treatment of business models, it works well and provides many diagnostic and discovery tools. It?s a thorough workbook for evaluating all aspects of a profitable business model.

Disabled visitors face high hurdles to London Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic Games ? which London has promised will be the most accessible and inclusive ever ? are just weeks away. All sports venues are fully equipped for disabled visitors, but many city-goers with physical impairments say they still feel like second-class citizens on public transport.

?I am shocked at how disabled I am here; I have never felt so handicapped,? said Laura Hamilton, a 28-year-old American with muscular dystrophy living in London.

?I?m scared to go out on my own,? said the Californian, who quit her job in San Francisco and moved to Britain in March ?to see the world? before her condition deteriorates.

The London Underground is by far the fastest way to get around the city, but with just a handful of stations in the historic heart of the capital offering step-free access, Hamilton said ?it?s more of a novelty for wheelchair users.?

All black cabs are accessible, but using taxis or a car as a primary form of transportation is prohibitively expensive for most residents, so wheelchair users rely heavily on buses.

But Hamilton, who uses a small electric scooter, said that ?most times the drivers don?t want to pull into the curb so I?m told I can?t get on at all.?

Paralympian crawls off train
Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, who won 11 gold medals for Great Britain in five Paralympic Games and is a board member of Transport for London (TFL), the city's group responsible for the transportation system,?described how she recently had to crawl off a train.?

?My train was late into Kings Cross Station and the station had pretty much closed and there was no one who came to get me,? said the parliamentarian and TV presenter, who was born with spina bifida.

?So I got out of my chair, pushed my chair off, and crawled out of the train and got back into it,? she said.

Despite that incident and other cases of being ?forgotten? on long-distance trains, the athlete said the situation within London has improved greatly in recent years.

?But people coming from countries like the U.S. and Canada will find it a bit more tricky,? she said.

Dating back to 1863, the London Underground is the oldest metropolitan railway in the world. Disabled access renovations only began after a wheelchair ban was lifted less than 20 years ago.

TFL, which is run by the mayor, scrapped its promise to make a quarter of stations step free by 2010 and a third by 2013.

Now, 65 of the 270 stations have step free access from street to platform, but most of those still have a gap between the platform and train.

Wheelchair access will be available at locations key to the Games ? Stratford for the Olympic Park, Southfields for tennis at Wimbledon, and Green Park for equestrian events ? but, not at the vast majority of tourist hot spots, including Piccadilly Circus, Notting Hill, and Covent Garden.

Grey-Thompson said upgrades had to be chosen carefully as ?it costs more than 100 million pounds to make a central London station wheelchair-accessible.?

?Left to the side of the road?
Meanwhile, the bus system was completely overhauled in 2007.

?Our bus fleet is the most accessible fleet in the world ? with every one of our 8,500 buses low-floor wheelchair-accessible and fitted with ramps,? said Wayne Trevor, Accessibility Manager for TFL. However, only 60 percent of bus stops are fully accessible.

?We get a lot of complaints from wheelchair users left to the side of the road,? said Lianna Etkind, Campaigns and Outreach Coordinator for disabled rights group Transport for All.

Californian Hamilton said she often feels like a ?third-class citizen? as her husband begs drivers to let her on and one in four drive away without her.

?Drivers are definitely required to pick up disabled passengers,? TFL said in an email response, adding that passengers are encouraged to lodge complaints which can result in driver retraining or dismissal.

The installation of tactile paving and audio-visual displays has assisted blind and deaf passengers, but recession-induced staff cuts have made it harder to receive personal assistance.

Carole Cherrington, a blind 43-year-old who has lived in London her entire life, took the Underground on her own for the first time in March. She said she had to rely on a stranger to get to her destination and found the journey ?extremely distressing.?

TFL has since provided her with a ?travel buddy? free of charge, but she said: ?I feel excluded by society in being able to get around independently; I hope having the Paralympics here will bring more awareness.?

Michael Theobold, who is profoundly deaf, said that he had encountered dangerous situations when he couldn?t hear last-minute audio announcements.

The 64-year-old former teacher recalled in an email interview that he was unable to hear a warning to move along the track at Marble Arch station.

?There was a sudden surge of people and I was very nearly knocked off balance on to the electrified track,? he said.

?An army of volunteers?
Transport for London is eager to ensure that the Olympics run without a hitch.

?An army of volunteers will be drafted in to assist our operations during Games time,? TFL said in an email.

Scores of extra buses, manual track-to train ramps, and fast-response elevator engineers will also be brought in.

Transport for All?s Etkind said she was hopeful that the extra resources would help disabled visitors get around the city successfully.?

?It?s great that TFL is improving access to the Underground during the Olympics and Paralympics. But access and inclusion isn?t just for Games time, it?s for life,? she said.

DEAR JOURNALISM STUDENTS: Don't Mean To ... - Business Insider

We had a good laugh in the (virtual) newsroom this weekend when folks started passing around this letter-to-students from a journalism professor at the University of Tampa.

The professor, who describes himself as a "college journalism scholar," advised his students not to admire the success of our Deputy Editor Joe Weisenthal, who was named the best business journalist of 2011 and was recently profiled by the New York Times.

Why doesn't the professor think his students should admire Joe Weisenthal?

As best I can tell from his letter, the professor thinks:

• Joe Weisenthal works too hard
• Joe Weisenthal goes to the bathroom too much
• Joe Weisenthal publishes too many posts each day
• Joe Weisenthal, in his role as real-time commentator, occasionally expresses opinions that turn out to be wrong [welcome to market commentary, professor!]
• Joe Weisenthal works for a publication whose only concern is informing and entertaining its digital readers, instead of writing magazine articles that college journalism scholars approve of

Instead of admiring Joe Weisenthal, the professor says, his students should admire Anthony Shadid, the amazing New York Times print journalist who recently died while on assignment in Syria.

And there, at least, the professor has some good advice for his students: Anthony Shadid was indeed amazing. If the professor's students think the print version of the New York Times will be around long enough for them to become international print-journalism war correspondents for it--and they want to become international print-journalism war correspondents for the print version of the New York Times--they should absolutely learn from Anthony Shadid. He was one of the best.

If the professor's students want to work in a newer medium, however, one that is gradually becoming the primary medium that the world's people gather their news and information from, the students would do well to have more respect for Joe Weisenthal's skill than their professor does.

Because in this new medium, Joe Weisenthal is also one of the best.

A few points on this:

• Yes, it's true: There's nothing that fuels success like hard work, passion, talent, and a will to win.? The professor seems appalled that Joe Weisenthal loves to work so much. Perhaps that's because, in the past couple of decades of print journalism, life had been so good that print journalists got used to not having to work much. Perhaps that's because, for the professor, work is "work" (unpleasant toiling). Or perhaps that's because the professor has tenure. In any event, it's true that Joe Weisenthal's dedication, intensity, and passion for what he does are part of what makes him so popular with our readers. He cares passionately about whatever story he's covering--so passionately that he wants to stay on top of it. Our readers love that.
• Storytelling in the digital medium is very different than storytelling in print or broadcast.? In a world in which millions of sources of information are a click away, having a talented journalist monitor and filter and add smart context to that global information fire hose in real time is extremely valuable to readers. Basically, this medium is a hybrid of broadcast and print: That's why Joe Weisenthal and other talented digital writers write fast and speak conversationally (TV news hosts do the same thing--they just do it on camera). If the professor worked in a profession in which news mattered, he might have more appreciation for that.
• The skills required to do what a great real-time digital journalist does are different than those required to do what a great magazine writer does. That's not a knock against magazines--magazines are great. But it's why most magazine writers fail miserably when they try to write for this medium: Because they're good at writing magazine articles, not at telling stories using the full capabilities of the digital medium, including covering unfolding stories in real-time, using text, pictures, video, and commentary.
• Doing what Joe Weisenthal does is extraordinarily difficult. That's why there are so few Joe Weisenthals. I'm just guessing here, but I'd bet that if we put the good professor in Joe Weisenthal's chair, he would fail miserably. Why? Because he would try to write magazine articles, which most online readers get enough of in magazines.

Basically, like a lot of critics about digital journalism, the professor seems to regard the "Long Magazine Article" as the highest and best form of journalism, to which all budding journalists should aspire.

And that's fine. Great long magazine articles are great, and hopefully some people will keep writing them.

But holding the "Long Magazine Article" up as the highest and best form of journalism is to impugn other forms of journalism that require just as much talent and effort to produce and, in many cases, have far wider readership and far more promising future employment prospects than long magazine journalism.

For example:

• TV. One suspects the professor also does not admire TV reporters. This is also typical of many snobby print folks, who dismiss TV journalists as "talking heads." Well, let's at least acknowledge that those talking heads are viewed by vastly more people than print journalists--and are therefore much more influential. And let's acknowledge that they make a lot more money than print journalists. Also, any print journalist who thinks it's easy to be a compelling talking head should take a look at the awful "video news shows" produced by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and other prestigious print news outlets. Making good TV is difficult. Print folks don't know how to do it.
• Digital. Successful digital news outlets, ourselves included, are hiring and training as many talented digital journalists as we can. These folks all have a couple of key attributes:

• They come in open-minded, willing to experiment and learn the best ways to tell stories in this medium, not in other media.

• They're multi-talented, combining the following skills: Writing, editing, news judgement, storytelling, photography, videography, intensity, creativity, passion, and speed.

It's also important to note, because the professor didn't, that Joe Weisenthal's style of digital journalism is only one part of what has made Business Insider and other thriving digital news outlets so successful.

In our newsroom, which now numbers about 50 very talented people, we also have folks who are extremely skilled at disciplines that the professor might find more familiar and admirable, such as investigative journalism, photography, videography, technology and feature production. Our investigative pieces and features look different than similar stories in magazines, of course, because--again--this medium is different, but they're longer than some of our real-time news posts. And the professor seems to admire length.

In hopes that the professor might want to share these, too, with his students, here are a few we would recommend to him:

The bottom line: We're eager to hire as many talented digital journalists as we can (not TV or print journalists--digital journalists). The way we view it is that digital journalism is in the same place as TV journalism was in the 1940s and 1950s--loved by viewers, exciting and innovative for journalists, growing extraordinarily rapidly and therefore offering young journalists enormous opportunity, and sniffed at by The Establishment.

So, if any of the professors' students have any of the attributes described above and are eager to work in the medium of the future instead of the media of the past, we'd love to hear from you.

Just five months ago, Bassel Shahade, a film student at Syracuse University, was explaining to the hosts of Democracy Now! that he had to speak quietly. He had hunkered down in an apartment in Damascus, Syria and worried that soldiers outside could hear him. ??

?Thousands of detainees are still in the prisons,? Shahade said in a low voice. ?Among them are tens of my friends. They are not terrorists. They are filmmakers, journalists, doctors, lawyers. They are very high intellectual people and activists.?

In the studio, host Amy Goodman worried for Shahade?s safety. ?We can hear you just fine, Bassel, but we want you to be very careful,? Goodman said. ?You can tell us you can?t talk. That is fine.?

Shahade, 28, was killed Monday while filming the aftermath of attacks by government security forces. The United Nations believes that 9,000 people, most of them civilians,?have been killed during the 14-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.
